Alajuelense got a rough welcome to the South American club competitions when they went down 4-0 to Chile's Colo Colo in Alajuela last night. Colo Colo were arriving under a cloud of uncertainty, with a caretaker coach and the fact that the albos had not won away from Chile in nine years. Funny thing about this match was that it was closely matched for most of the first half, and it took a very well-taken free kick by Matías Fernández to separate the sides. In the second half, the Chilean side made the better adjustments, their through passes into the penalty area set off all kinds of panic in Alajuelense's defensive unit, and Colo Colo took full advantage.
The return leg is next Tuesday in Santiago...I think Colo Colo might be able to sneak into the next round.
